Hadder looked around the dark cave, which seemed a lot less oppressive now that the overpowering smells weren’t affecting him as badly. Still, he wondered if they’d have to dive back through the water to get back to the rest of the island.
As he stood at the edge of the water, looking downward, Clara came up behind him and ran her fingers up his back. “Are you that eager to go for another swim?” she asked.
He enjoyed her touch, but he was not looking forward to the dark swim ahead of them. “I don’t know that we have a choice,” he said without looking back at her.
“We’ve barely searched this area,” she purred at him.
“Do you think you’re going to find something that we didn’t find before?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I don’t know why, but I can see a lot better than I could before.”
He finally looked back. He just realized that she hadn’t bothered putting her clothes back on. Was that tail there before? It fit with the ears, after all, but was a bit of a shock. He had to wonder how she was going to put her shorts back on with that new tail of hers. But even though her beautiful body was right next to him, it was her eyes that drew all his attention. They were still glowing with that cat-like yellowness.
“Your eyes,” he said.
“What about them?” she asked.
“I’ll have to take a picture of it later, but I think they’re changing. In fact, several changes are happening to you.”
“Well, whatever the changes are, they feel amazing. I feel amazing.” She stretched as if just waking up, but she looked remarkably feline. She looked around. “I’ll see what I can find. Don’t jump in the water just yet.”
“I won’t,” Hadder said. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. He turned back to the rest of the cave, looking for Zoe. In a moment, he found her, putting the Lyre back from where she had originally got it.
“Do you know another way out of here?” Hadder asked.
Zoe shook her head. “I only came down here a few times, and we went through the underwater passageway, both in and out. It seemed like part of the ritual for Zeus. He was a strong swimmer, and my sisters and I had trouble keeping up.”
He nodded. “It would certainly make it easier if there were another way out of here.”
“I’ve lived here for over two millennia. Believe me when I say that there’s no other way in or out.”
“Found something,” Clara said.
Hadder let out a little chuckle when the color drained from Zoe’s face, visible even in the low light. They made their way over to where Clara was crouched.
“Do you see this?” Clara asked.
“I can’t see anything,” Hadder said. It was true. They were in the darkest part of the cave now, and Hadder couldn’t even see the features of the wall in front of him.
“Maybe you need to get your eyes checked, old man,” she said with a laugh.
